Epoxy vs. Polyurethane Floors: Making the Right Choice

When it comes to choosing a floor coating, both epoxy and polyurethane have their unique advantages. Epoxy offers superior adhesion and chemical resistance, while polyurethane provides better UV stability and flexibility.

Epoxy coatings are typically thicker and self-leveling, making them ideal for uneven surfaces. They create a hard, durable surface that's perfect for high-traffic areas and can withstand heavy equipment. However, they may yellow over time when exposed to sunlight.

Polyurethane coatings, on the other hand, maintain their color better and offer superior scratch resistance. They're more flexible than epoxy, which helps prevent cracking due to substrate movement. However, they generally don't bond as well to concrete and may require an epoxy primer.

For most residential applications, we recommend a hybrid system: an epoxy base coat for adhesion and durability, topped with a polyurethane clear coat for UV protection and scratch resistance.
